We’re now about a third of the way into the Big Bash. Here’s what we’ve learnt so far that can help with some decent Big Bash bets for the next couple of weeks.

Big Bash bets to look out for

D’Arcy Short a huge loss to the Hurricanes

The Hurricanes opener has so far registered scores of 51, 9, 60 and 0. By his standards it’s actually not that great a return but you know that sooner or later those big scores will come. The Hurricanes will be hoping it’s sooner because they could really do with a couple of wins before he departs for ODI duty.

He was only called up to the Australian side because Sean Abbott got injured and the Selectors took the somewhat bizarre decision to replace a fast bowler with a spinning all-rounder, which is the role he’ll be playing for Australia if he gets a game.

What’s even more bizarre is that Short has had plenty of failures in the IPL over the last two years so it may not be the place for him to play anyway.

At least Matthew Wade will come in from the Test side when Short leaves for the ODI side. With Short (120 runs) missing matches and Wade already having missed matches, Ben McDermott (88 runs) may not have much to beat in terms of finishing top Hurricanes batsman. He’s 13/8 with Betfair Sportsbook.

The Hurricanes are a big-looking 11.0 with Unibet to go all the way and that’s one of the better Big Bash bets at this stage of proceedings.

Tom Curran an option on all markets

As it happens, Abbott would have missed a few matches on ODI duty anyway but the problem is the Sydney Sixers’ management can’t be sure how much he can train while he’s still injured.

The Sixers’ bowling attack is one of the best in the Big Bash but one way or another, Abbott is a big loss. What it does is put a lot more pressure on Tom Curran, who is right up there with the star players of the Big Bash so far.

His nine wickets are second only to Abbott’s 11 while his 89 runs put him in fifth place in the Sixers’ top batsmen list.

What was really impressive was that the two ‘big’ knocks he played were in winning causes . It was his 35 not out that forced a Super Over against the Thunder (which they went on to win) while his 43 not out from just 21 balls meant their total against the Scorchers was unmanageable. He got man of the match both times.

He’s short enough in the top bowler markets but he’s very much in contention for man of the match at big prices because of how he can have such an impact with both bat and ball. Don’t discount his chances as top batsman, either.

Backing him every game at around 15.0 to 20.0 will probably leave you in profit overall because one of them will come off sooner or later again. That 43 was a winner on Big Bash bets for top batsman. It’s [7.0] with Unibet the Sixers can win the Bash for a second time.

Stars full of overseas options

What a luxury the Melbourne Stars have. While every other team only has two overseas players available at any time, the Stars have three. That’s because Pakistani fast bowler Haris Rauf has remained with the squad while both Dale Steyn and Sandeep Lamichhane have missed games through injury or fatigue. And it’s a good thing he did.

First he came in for Steyn while the South African was getting fully fit and then he came in for Lamichhane when the Nepalese wasn’t fully fit against the Thunder.

When Steyn plays his final match before reporting for South Africa ODI duty, Pat Brown will come in for Steyn but Rauf will no doubt hang about. It makes plenty of people wonder why they’re not playing Rauf all the time.

He’s taken 10 wickets in just three matches and has gone at just 5.91 an over. He was man-of-the-match in the second one but could easily have got it in all three. He’s also worth a look for top bowler and MOM honours every time he plays so look out for those Big Bash bets.
