Is online cricket betting in Kenya legal?
Yes. For a while a Kenyan company appointed by the state called Betkeny.com offered online cricket betting in Kenya, but it folded.
No matter. Kenyan customers can open online cricket betting accounts with a host of European sportsbooks such as Betfair, Unibet and Betway who all accept Kenyan cricket betting players and hand out generous welcome offers when they sign up.
These Sportsbooks do of course also offer plenty of betting markets on sports beyond cricket, such as football, rugby, tennis and athletics.
Online cricket betting in Kenya is perfectly legal from a Kenyan person’s point of view. They can open accounts with whoever they want.

Is Cricket betting popular in Kenya?
Cricket betting in Kenya remains extremely popular, albeit not enjoying quite the same levels of popularity enjoyed by the likes of football or rugby.
It’s a huge shame that cricket in Kenya didn’t kick on after their amazing success at the 2003 World Cup where the Kenyan team ended a runners-up in Pool B, in the process knocking out the West Indies and hosts South Africa before also qualifying from the Super Sixes stage to book a place in the semi-finals.
Sadly, an excellent unbeaten century from Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and 83 from Sachin Tendulkar were too good for Kenya, denying them a place in the final of the Cricket World Cup but no Kenyan cricket fan will forget the efforts of skipper Steve Tikolo, ace all-rounder Maurice Odumbe, hard-hitting keeper Kennedy Otieno and the Obuya brothers, among others.
The Kenyan cricket team is going through a tough period now with little talent on the pitch and lots of administrative problems off it but that hasn’t stopped the thirst for cricket betting in Kenya.
With fellow African nations Zimbabwe having a bit of a revival of late and South Africa a permanent member of cricket’s elite, there’s still a lot of interest in cricket betting in Kenya.
Do Kenyans have to pay tax on cricket betting winnings?
No, not a cent. You get to keep what you win which is in stark contrast to say lottery winnings, where the state automatically charges you with a 20% tax.
It’s the Sportsbooks who have to pay tax, not the players.
Which currencies can cricket betting players bet with?
Most of the European Sportsbooks won’t accept Kenyan Shillings but some will. In any case, if you have Euros, British Pounds, US Dollars or even south African Rand, they will all be accepted.
Payment methods for Kenyan cricket betting players
This has proven to be a bit of a barrier between Kenyan players and European bookmakers.
It is possible to deposit money into your Betfair account (for example) via bank transfer but you’ll have to do so with an agent at the counter rather than online.
Alternatively, Kenyan players can use the likes of M-Pesa (operated by Vodafone) or Airtel to make deposits. With Airtel you need to log in, select ‘pay bill’ and enter the Sportsbook’s business name in order to make a deposit. Betway, who offer a £30 free bet when you sign up, are one of the bookmakers who accept this method of depositing.
Pakistan are a tasty-looking 9/1 (10.00) with Unibet to win the World Cup. When opening an account with Unibet as a Kenyan customer you can claim £30 in free bets if your first-ever bet loses.
