Melbourne Renegades v Perth Scorchers tips including a big-priced Renegades top batsman who can defy the odds with a big knock.

Melbourne Renegades

Bad news. Their top wicket-taker and joint top wicket-taker of the whole of the Big Bash- Dwayne Bravo –  is now strutting his stuff at the Melbourne Stars. Daniel Harris and more significantly Aaron Finch, last year’s openers, are now also Australia’s Test match openers. So, we won’t be seeing them for a while.

Good news: this time round they have Mohammad Nabi for the whole tournament. Fellow overseas player Usman Khan Shinwiri could be a big hit over the first half of the season. Dan Christian has been brought in and is nothing if not vastly experienced. Still, they’re the Betting Maestro tip to finish rock bottom.

Perth Scorchers

One of the Betting Maestro’s tips to go on and win it. Read the article to see why they’re so highly rated.

As ever, their strength is in their bowling. Assuming overseas duo David Willey and Usman Qadir play alongside all-rounders Ashton Agar and Ashton Turner, it’s a nice problem to have wondering which of Andrew Tye, Joel Paris, Jason Behrendoff, Nathan Coulter-Nile or Jhye Richardson fill the three remaining bowling spots. Actually, make that two: Andrew Tye will definitely play.

They will however be without star batsman Shaun Marsh for the foreseeable future. On the flipside, brother Mitchell is currently out of the Test side so is available to play, and captain, the Scorchers here.

Scorchers justified favourites but let’s wait

The Scorchers are favourites at around 1.8. You’ll see worse bets than that one over the course of the tournament. Especially given that for the Renegades, not being able to count on inspirational skipper Aaron Finch is a very new experience. Still, with the Scorchers’  batting line-up a little uncertain, we’d like to see how everyone fits into place before smashing into them as favourites.

Melbourne Renegades Top Batsman

If you want the most likely winner, go with Cameron White. He got a load of runs last year, has seen it all before and may well open the batting, normally a crucial element of a top batsman bet.

But if you want the value selection, go with Mohammad Nabi. With Harris and Finch out of the equation, a couple of players batting at 4 or 5 last season may be shifted a couple of places up the order. He’s a class act with both bat and ball and has half a season of Big Bash experience under his belt.

Even if he does bat at 4 or 5 he could well be at the crease sooner than expected. After all, they’re up against the best bowling unit in the competition so it’s unlikely the Top 3 will be making hay and he arrives at the crease with just 3 or 4 overs to go. He’s 8.5 with Unibet and that has to be considered a good price.

The second of our Melbourne Renegades v Perth Scorchers tips comes on the man-of-the-match market.

As you’ll know from reading our man-of-the-match article, betting on an all-rounder playing for the team favourite to win the match is one of the oldest tricks in the book. After all, you’ll get two bites of the cherry because they can shine with bat…or ball.

We’ve established Perth should win this and there are good reasons to side with Englishman David Willey to be man-of-the-match. Normally, an all-rounder bowls 2-4 overs and bats at about 5 or 6 in this format. But Willey could well bowl 4 overs and bat as high as 3; at least those are the noises coming out of the Perth camp.

But being given 4 overs and batting high up is one thing, delivering is quite another. But n this case, he’s more than good enough to deliver. This is Willey’s format,, he’s played in the Bash before and the 11.0 that he’s man of the match may not be around the next game.
